Wild horses are a major part of the American West. They are also known as mustangs, and they were originally brought to North America by Spanish settlers in the 16th century. The Wild Horse and Burro Act of 1971 was signed into law by President Richard Nixon on December 15, 1971. The act established a national policy for the protection and management of wild free-roaming horses and burros on public lands in the United States.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is responsible for managing more than 47 million acres of land in the west that includes approximately 37,000 wild horses.
